Ideas for Teachers Set 1

URBAN LIVING LABS

Urban living labs are innovative settings that connect stakeholders from different disciplines and research to develop or create solutions to urban challenges. The main goal of an urban living lab is to create new products which can be an object, a service, a technology, an application or a system as a sustainable solution that can be applied in the society.
The government of Karnataka has collaborated with the Netherlands healthcare unit to improve on healthcare quality and it's affordability through eHealth and medical devices developed in a living lab they set up in May 2018 in Bangalore. This gave an opportunity for many interdisciplinary institutes to come together like, academic institutes, hospitals, IT, med-tech companies, start-ups etc. The Manipal Academy of Higher Education, participated in this unique challenge(s) driven initiative that aimed at bridging existing gaps in the healthcare industry. Academic institutions are one of the integral part of innovation, social development and in turn part of a living lab. It forms a reliable source of knowledge, creative and innovative thoughts, which can be made use of appropriately to bring socially desirable changes that are required in the society. The need of the hour is to apply the knowledge and skill educational institution imparts in each one of us, in the society we live in for sustainable growth and development.

"Challenges in Education"

How familiar it sounds! Isn't it? And what are we actually doing to solve these challenges? Involve every stakeholder and discuss every possible thing on earth except the most important stakeholder - students!
If you are at the very least concerned about the thought process of the students and wants to know better solutions given by them to solve their own problems, then look up the article linked below:)

Time multipliers

The strategy of multiplying time does not magically give you 48 hours a day.  Instead it is a method to free up more time in the future by prioritizing our tasks based on its significance. According to Rory Vaden, time multipliers ask 4 questions about their tasks.
1. Can I eliminate this task?
This question helps to say 'no' to task that we do because we did not want to disappoint others.
2. If I can't eliminate this task, can I automate it?
This question helps identify tasks that can be done for you by others, like buying groceries online or paying bills online.
3. Can it be delegated,  or can I teach others to do it?
Delegation of work to others gives you more time to do other tasks.
4. Should I do this task now,  or can I do it later?
This question focuses on 'procrastination on purpose'. This is a way of deliberately keeping some tasks for later because it is not urgent or significant enough to be done now.

School Climate and Safety

The American institutes of research states that a friendly, helpful school climate contributes to students and teachers social and emotional and cognitive development. An optimistic and positive school climate and conditions for learning contribute to student’s high achievement and improve test scores, student participation, and attendance, promotion of grade and graduations rates.
“Efforts to improve school climate and safety can also reduce violent behavior and mitigate teacher burnout. To achieve these outcomes, however, reliable, accessible data about the quality of learning environments are needed” (American Institutes of Research, School climate and safety)
In the United States and around the globe, there is a developing enthusiasm for school climate change and a thankfulness this is a reasonable, information driven school improvement methodology that advances more secure, increasingly steady, and progressively thoughtful K–12 schools.

EXISTENTIAL INTELLIGENCE:

In his 1983 book Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences psychologist Howard Gardner propounded that there was no singular intelligence based on an IQ test but rather ' multiple intelligences'.
The original 8 intelligence modals he identified were:
·         Visual-Spatial Intelligence
·         Linguistic-Verbal Intelligence
·         Logical-Mathematical Intelligence
·         Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence
·         Musical Intelligence
·         Interpersonal Intelligence
·         Intrapersonal Intelligence
·         Naturalistic Intelligence
In 2009 Gardner suggested the addition of existential intelligence.
Existential intelligence is focused on those who have an affinity for asking the bigger questions in life like:
·         Why am I here? Why are we here?
·         Are there other dimensions and if so what are they like?
·         Can animals understand us, or do animals go to heaven?
·         Are there really ghosts?
·         Where do we go when we die?
·         Why are some people evil?
·         Is there life on other planets?
·         Where is heaven?
·         Where does God live?

Physical education

I read this article it clearly explains,
Physical education is important part in today’s life. Physical activity also influence individual life style and health. Physical training is related to the physique of human body. It is taken during primary and secondary education which promote health. It provide psychological benefits such as concentration, awareness and positive mood. Physical education develops students confidence and skills such as collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking.some teachers began to incorporate stress reduction techniques such as yoga, deep breath, teaching non traditional sports may also provide motivation for students to increase their activity and can help them learn about different cultures. The important trend is the incorporation of health and nutrition into the psychological education curriculum.

Flipped Classroom

Flipped classroom is in which the traditional educational method or practice is reversed. This approach is widely practiced in China and the US where technology is highly integrated into education. Flipped classroom in which the students gain first exposure to materials such as viewing materials online prior to class and learn in their own pace. So during class they highly participate in discussion and active learning . The main pillars that the teacher much keep in mind while implementing flipped classroom is, Flexible environment, learning culture, intentional content and professional educators. One main advantage of this approach is it helps teachers in effective time management. This helps teachers to create opportunities for students to apply the knowledge they acquired by watching the video and practice higer order thinking. As each learner have their own strengths and weaknesses in studies, flipped classroom accommodates differentiated instruction.

Can learning through puppets help children to express themselves ?

We have all seen puppet shows but do we know how this can be used as a teaching aid especially for those who are less expressive ?
Me being an introvert, I first experienced the feeling of coming out of my comfort zone without any fear to express myself when I witnessed a puppet play in which I was a part. This was when I realized how effective can puppet plays be for an introvert student.
I kept this as one of my teaching aid during the internship. Surprisingly it worked the same way for one of my student who was a silent boy.   The puppet class was the only class in which he initiated the talk with me.
At this point of time I was convinced that learning through puppets do make a difference in students growth especially who are introverts.
Puppets are also used as a play therapy by counsellors to help children who feel too uncomfortable (too afraid /too angry / too distrusting ) to express themselves.

Code of Ethics
It's important to understand that when we get a teaching position we are agreeing to follow the code of ethics like doctors, social workers or any other profession. We can not push our personal beliefs  on students because they are audience.
